Small Lots Barbera 2013

Master Winemaker Howard Soon has finely crafted Canada's only Barabera in its classic style! With only 10 barrels produced, this is a wine you will be proud to share with friends and family!



FLAVOUR PROFILE
Deep ruby red colour with a wonderful bouquet of cherry and plum, accented by notes of leather, earth and oak.
This medium-bodied wine has smooth, soft tannins and food-friendly acidity.
Flavours of red berry and cherry fill the mouth.
Cherry and red berry fruit flavours along with drying notes of black tea linger on the finish.
A great wine for cool evening sipping or enjoy with mushroom or meat sauce based lasagna; cheesy eggplant parmesan; red sauce pasta dishes with sausage or meatballs; Pecorino and Grana Padano cheeses; and gourmet pizza topped with roasted tomato, mozzarella, basil, grilled eggplant and roasted red pepper.

GROWING CONDITIONS
After a succession of cooler vintages, the 2013 growing season created considerable excitement throughout the valley. Although June experienced slightly wetter and cooler conditions, the summer months of July, August and early September saw warm, sunny weather. Late September ushered in cooler wetter weather; and while October was dry, the cooler conditions assisted in providing balanced acidity levels. Look for big red wines with ripe fruit flavours and well-integrated tannins. White wines will show fruit-forward aromatics with richer, rounder mouth-feel. An above average to excellent vintage.

WINEMAKER NOTES
“Favourable, warm heat units in 2013 helps our Barbera reach full expression. The Barbera planting is at the base of the cliff at the southern tip of our estate vineyard. The accumulated heat offered by the cliff, results in fully ripe grapes with moderate acidity. Careful attention by our vineyard manager to limit yields, brings full, ripe flavours and smooth tannins. This vineyard captures the true expression of Canada's only Barbera.”

Wine Making Gentle crush, then fermented in small open top fermenters with Brunello yeast. Full malolactic fermentation for a supple mouth-feel. Aged in American and French oak barrels for 20 months.
