Quick Overview

Sandhill Estate Vineyard - 24 Barrels

Small Lots Three 2017

Our Three is a unique and distinctive blend of popular Italian varietals, grown in the Okanagan Valley.

BLEND: 44% Sangiovese, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Barbera

• Deep garnet colour with a lovely bouquet of dark plum and black cherry fruit, mingling with notes of leather, baking spices, earth, mushroom, and smoky oak, plus a warm savoury note.
•  This medium to full-bodied wine has silky tannins, great texture and food-friendly acidity.
•  Blue plum and cherry fruit notes unfold on the palate, complemented by notes of sweet spice and earth.
•  Dark cherry, blackberry, coffee, chocolate and Chai spice notes linger beautifully on the finish.
•  Serve with grilled red meats; rosemary lamb chops; roasted leg of lamb; rich Rigatoni Bolognese with Parmigiano Reggiano; meaty cheesy lasagna; veal parmesan; cured meats and crusty breads along with Pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano cheese.

A cool, wet spring gave way to a late start to the growing season, which led directly into a hot summer with a record breaking dry spell. This accelerated the ripening, bringing the fruit back on track. September brought cooler weather, slowing the ripening and allowing a good window for picking. This resulted in wines that are more balanced with lower alcohols and higher natural acidity. Overall, the 2017 vintage was lower in heat units than 2016 but still higher than average.

"This year we increased the amount of Sangiovese, as it was an excellent vintage for this varietal, providing more depth and complexity. The extended growing season provided the true expression of the Italian varietals, Barbera and Sangiovese, and to show their amazing potential in the Okanagan Valley. The use of Cabernet Sauvignon assists in building the structure and tannins of the blend, along with increasing complexity, depth and polish. This is our version of what a ‘Super Italian’ might be, with Cabernet Sauvignon adding more lift to the blend. Enjoy over the next 5 to 6 years, into 2025."

Wine Making

• The warmer vintage gave the Italian varietals more expression, richness and polish.
• Gentle crush, then fermented in small open top fermenters. Fermented with a yeast isolated from Brunello fermentations in Italy to bring out the classic Italian character of these varietals (fruit, spice and earth components).
• Full malolactic fermentation for a supple mouth-feel.
• Each varietal is aged individually in oak barrels for 18 months, then the top barrels are selected and blended together, then returned to oak barrels for a further 2 months to allow integration in barrel before bottling. Aged in new (55%) and older American 90% and French 10% oak.
