Quick Overview

Sandhill Estate Vineyard

Soon Chardonnay 2015

GROWING CONDITIONS
The southern Okanagan Valley experienced back-to-back seasons of extreme heat units in 2014 and 2015, which saw 1702 and 1764 Growing Degree Days, respectively. The 2015 vintage saw the highest recorded GDD since the record-breaking 1998 vintage at 1778 GDD. The long, warm, sunny and dry growing period provided a good size crop of high quality fruit. Look for white wines with pure fruit expression and big bold reds with soft tannins and ripe, rich fruit. 2015 is another epic vintage for the history books.

WINEMAKER AND GROWER – THE RELATIONSHIP
Howard Soon, a naturalist in the winemaking process, believes terroir gives the grapes their distinctive qualities, and through minimal handling, processing and technology, the integral expression of the vineyard, and therefore the grape, shines through. Robert Goltz, our estate grower, has worked and walked alongside Howard for over 30 years, and together they have shared their experiences within the vineyard. This combined respect for terroir shows in every bottle of wine.
After their daily visits to the Sandhill Estate Vineyard to taste the grapes, they chose a single block (Block B11 South) of 19 year old Chardonnay vines which provided the true expression of this unique site, and on September 1 the grapes were hand-harvested and hand-sorted.
Wine Making Hand-harvested and hand-sorted from Sandhill Estate Vineyard. The grapes were whole-bunch pressed, and then the juice was separated, and 85% was sent to French oak barrels and 15% to stainless steel tanks for fermentation. The wine was aged in stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels for 9 months. The top few barrels that exhibited the greatest complexity, mouth-feel and balance was then blended with the stainless steel aged Chardonnay to develop a wine with great balance between fresh, pure fruit expression and oak barrel nuance.
