Quick Overview

Vanessa Vineyards & Sandhill Estate

Sandhill Merlot 2018

FLAVOUR PROFILE
• Bright garnet colour with a bouquet of dark plum, cherry, smoke, oak, spice and cedar chest.
• This medium to full-bodied Merlot has soft yet drying tannins, great structure and moderate acidity.
• The extra-dry, lingering finish shows notes of black tea, dark plum, cherry and spice.
• Enjoy with grilled red meats and sautéed mushrooms; Portobello mushrooms; black bean stews; lamb stews; roasted leg of lamb; beef brisket; three-year aged Cheddar and Asiago cheese.

GROWING CONDITIONS
The mid and southern Okanagan, and Similkameen Valleys, experienced an early start to the growing season with warm, dry conditions which persisted until August. The month of August and early September experienced smoke covered valleys from local wild fires which slowed the ripening process, allowing for an extended period for ripening and development of flavours. During late September conditions improved providing an excellent harvest period for early ripening varietals. An early October frost caused some issues with late ripening varietals, but overall the 2018 vintage saw a near normal to good growing season.
Wine Making

• Merlot grapes harvested from Vanessa Vineyard in the Similkameen Valley and Sandhill Estate Vineyard in the Okanagan Valley.
• Loose crush, gentle but complete extraction of the fruit.
• Warm fermentation, and a full malolactic fermentation.
• Aged 14 months in American and French oak barrels.
