Quick Overview

Vanessa Vineyards & Sandhill Estate

Sandhill Merlot 2017

FLAVOUR PROFILE
Deep garnet colour with a bouquet of ripe plum, blackberry, Chai spice, sweet oak, chocolate and vanilla extract.
This full-bodied Merlot has soft yet drying tannins, great structure and moderate acidity.
The fruit-forward palate shows notes of ripe blackberry and plum, with accents of spice, coffee bean and smoky oak.
The extra-dry, lingering finish shows notes of blackberry, coffee, toasted oak, black tea leaves and spicy black pepper.
Enjoy with grilled red meats and sautéed mushrooms; Portobello mushrooms; black bean stews; lamb stews; roasted leg of lamb; beef brisket; three-year aged Cheddar and Asiago cheese.

GROWING CONDITIONS
A cool, wet spring gave way to a late start to the growing season, which led directly into a hot summer with a record breaking dry spell. This accelerated the ripening, bringing the fruit back on track. September brought cooler weather, slowing the ripening and allowing a good window for picking. This resulted in wines that are more balanced with lower alcohols and higher natural acidity. Overall, the 2017 vintage was lower in heat units than 2016 but still higher than average.

WINEMAKING
Merlot grapes (100%) harvested from Vanessa Vineyard in the Similkameen Valley and Sandhill Estate Vineyard in the Okanagan Valley.
 Loose crush, gentle but complete extraction of the fruit.
 Warm fermentation, and a full malolactic fermentation.
 Aged 14 months in American and French oak barrels.
