FLAVOUR PROFILE
Deep ruby red colour with a wonderful bouquet of cherry, black pepper, strawberry, sweet oak, violet and plum. This full-bodied wine has velvety tannins, moderate acidity, and although technically dry, there is a note of delicate sweetness on the palate. Interesting flavours of red berry, cardamom spice, oak and plum pudding mingle in the mouth. Exotic spice, wild strawberry, charred barrel and espresso notes linger on the finish. Enjoy with braised lamb shanks, rich lentil dishes, marinated leg of lamb, beef bourguignon, Pecorino and Piave cheeses, and winter stews.
GROWING CONDITIONS
The 2009 growing season arrived late as the cold temperatures of a long winter seemed to drag on, much like 2008; the cold temperatures resulted in some reduced crops. However, unlike the 2008 vintage, the vines did catch up so that by early summer, vine development was at its normal stages. Summer was extremely hot and dry, which quickly advanced the ripeness of the slightly smaller than usual crop load, foretelling an early quick crush.
WINEMAKER NOTES
“Our Barbera planting is near the cliff at the southern tip of our estate vineyard. The accumulated heat offered by the cliff, resulted in fully ripe grapes with moderate acidity. Careful attention by our vineyard manager to limit yields, brings full, ripe flavours and smooth tannins. This vineyard captures the true expression of Canada's only Barbera.”
