Every year, when we make our wines at Sandhill, we discover unique and distinctive barrels that deserve very special attention. The result is our ever-evolving Small Lots program, showcasing these finely crafted BC creations. There are different reasons for the small quantities of BC wine produced in the Small Lots program:
- The grapes may be from small, specific blocks where new promising varietals are being tested (for example, Malbec at Phantom Creek Vineyard).
- They may be from blocks where Howard Soon and the grape grower decide to use innovative and different vineyard techniques as a test, such as lowering yields, different canopy management, hand pruning and so on.
- They may be small lots, even individual barrels, that Howard decides, because of their unique quality, to treat differently in winemaking and ageing

While Small Lots is our experimental program, it must meet all standards set for Sandhill, including single vineyard sourced grapes, true varietal characteristics and an expression of the vineyard. It also allows our winemaker to handcraft the wines by design, groom them to perfection, have fun and share the extraordinary results with wine aficionados.
